About The Event

As part of its 76th Black History Month Celebration for the vast LA Metro area and in commemoration of the Black History Month’s 100th Anniversary, the revered Our Authors Study Club (OASC) is co-presenting with Highways, The Till Artists Collective, and the African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA),  the OASC 2026 Annual “An Evening With Authors” conversation & book signing with bestselling author/award-winning actress, Denise Nicholas and New York Times Bestselling author, Antwone Fisher, who is also the award-winning screenwriter of Antwone Fisher based on his memoir, “Finding Fish. Doing this event during Black History Month is particularly significant for OASC, because it was chartered in 1945 by the founder of Black History Month, the legendary scholar and author, Dr. Carter G. Woodson.

A book signing and on-site reception follows this intimate evening of a moderated conversation and Q&A, that centers on Nicholas’s new memoir “Finding Home” and Fisher’s new book, “Reflections Beneath the Buckeye Trees: Notes from a Life”.  In addition, their previous works will be covered: Nicholas’s debut novel, “Freshwater Road” and Fisher’s “A Boy Should Know How To Tie a Tie, aside from “Reflections…” and “Finding Fish.”  Select books by both authors will also be available for sale on-site.

The conversation will also explore storytelling as both testimony and transformation—bridging literature, film, and lived experience while affirming Black history as a living continuum. For instance, Nicholas’s career spans the Civil Rights Movement, groundbreaking performances on television, and award-winning literary achievement. While Fisher’s deeply personal narratives of resilience and self-discovery have reshaped contemporary conversations around healing, identity, and authorship. As an example, the state of Ohio now requires potential foster parents to watch Antwone Fisher.  Together, the voices of Nicholas and Fisher reflect the power of truth-telling and the responsibility of artists to preserve cultural memory, while illuminating paths forward.

This event that converges history, vision and artistry is FREE, but SPACE IS VERY LIMITED and an RSVP is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED by clicking here. The Hospitality Hour begins at 5 pm, the Program begins at 6 pm, and the book signing and reception begin at 7:30 pm.  For more information on OASC and its programs go to www.oascla.org.
