About The Event

“A capacity to invoke a whole universe out of fragments of self,” writer Carlos Fuentes said about Frida Kahlo’s work.

Directed by Andrea Soto, Lo que el fuego me dio becomes an expanded immersive universe made up of performance, painting, music, and sculpture. Started as an intimate performance developed around the creator and performer’s Mexican roots, this project has grown into a letter to the community, held to gather and celebrate the beauty of ancestry.

The building of a temple, celebrated, then penetrated by the sun, burned down to the very Earth, to be rebirthed once more. The body as the temple of the soul. The face as the temple of the body. What happens when the body is fragmented and punctured by earthly elements, exterior collisions? Where is the shrine existing then?

Built with Dulce Escobedo, Maya Paredes, Erick Benitez, Nia Scovel, Nikki Ochoa, Quincy Clemons, Julian Prins.

About the creator:

Andrea Soto (she/her), raised in Juarez, Mexico,  is a first-generation Mexican American movement-based artist and collaborator based in Los Angeles. Pouring the physical environment into the viscera of the body, her multidimensional practice lives in performance, technology, collaboration, and data-gathering as shared collective research. She received her BFA in Dance/ Digital Arts from California Institute of the Arts. Her work has been exhibited at Human Resources LA, Something Poetic LA, Heidi Duckler’s Ebb and Flow, and Sharon Disney Lund Theatre. She has performed at MOCA, REDCAT, L.A. Dance Project, Night Gallery, Culture Hub’s Re-Fest, and Centre National de la Danse in Paris. Andrea builds poetic ecosystems that call for collaboration and exist as a collection of connectivity, deeply rooted in the mystical dismantling of hierarchical-systems and in a utopian world of boundless interconnectedness.

There will be use of fire and herbal smoke.
