LEMON YELLOW KITCHEN - World Premiere Play and Moderated Discussion

We are celebrating the festival’s 5th year with the world premiere of Artistic Director Tanya White’s full length play LEMON YELLOW KITCHEN. A Santa Monica family is literally haunted by a past they are unaware of until it threatens to take their home. Suddenly their comfort and confidence is shattered as they face each other and the ghosts who bring the truth to their front door. This powerful reading, in development, will be followed by the SMRT talk-back, moderated by American historian and academic Robin D. G. Kelly.

THEATER/STREAMING/STRIKE - Moderated Panel Discussion

With establishment theaters canceling programming mid-season, the real and imagined threat of AI and the Writers Guild reaching a deal to end the strike, there’s so much to unpack. We'll hear from women writers sharing insights into what it means to write for theater, television and beyond. Join us for an hour-long conversation and audience Q&A, kicking off our 5th Annual Playreading Festival - moderated by Writer/Producer Paula Killen

Panelists: Jamie Pachino, Kristina Wong, Angela Nissel

CRAFTING YOUR TEN MINUTE PLAY - Writing Workshop

SMRT Artistic Director and award winning playwright Tanya White, outlines a process for creating a ten-minute play. No experience is necessary, come with your writing tools (paper, pen and/or computer) and leave with an outline of your play and a draft of your first scene.

SHINEONLINE— LIVE! - Storytelling Workshop

Everyone has a story to share, whether you believe it, or not it’s true! Come join us and unleash your storyteller. Led by actor and teaching artist Julie Alexander, there well be exercises and games that will be fun for the whole family. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

SHINEONLINE— LIVE! - STORYTELLING SHOW

We gathered stories of people who live and work in Santa Monica . We’ll share the experience and welcome live and in-person storytellers who were part of the online workshop experience. This project was made possible in part with support from Art of Recovery, an initiative of the City of Santa Monica Cultural Affairs.

Featured Storytellers:  Larae Cantley, Flo Selfman, Christine Suárez

SALON - COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

This is a chance for everyone to be involved in the staged reading process. The audience will be part of the action collaborating with director and actors in bringing a script from the page to the stage!
